Kids dream about playing in the big leagues. In January, former big leaguer Rob Dromerhauser’s Team Pitch for a Cure traveled with a group of talented students to Legends Field in Tampa , Florida where the New York Yankees practice. Yankee Executive and NY Times best selling author Ray Negron approached Yankees owner Hank Steinbrenner and Vice President Felix Lopez with a plan to have twelve underprivileged boys from New York and Long Island area come to Tampa and play baseball on its facilities, they both approved the plan. Dromerhauser and Negron have been friends for years. It was an opportunity for the boys to get a taste of what it is like to be a big leaguer by pairing them up with Major League greats like New York Yankee legends Chris Chambliss, Bucky Dent, Mickey Rivers, Mike Torres, and Ron Bloomberg. They learned pitching, hitting, and fielding tips from the Pro’s. As a special treat the boys also began to understand the dynamics of body mechanics, warm up skills, and conditioning from 21st Century Wellness Academy, Pro Sports Trainer Robert Malichio whose practice in Bay Shore, NY is visited by Pro athletes such as Devalle Ellis, a Free Agent Wide Receiver, and New Orleans Saints Super Bowl Wide Receiver Marques Colston, and Dallas Cowboys Lineman, Steven Bowens. Yankee Magazine covered the event.

The boys traveled to IMG Baseball Academies in Bradenton , Florida , where a team was waiting to play against them. They had no idea that they would be facing an ex-major league pitcher in Steve Frey who played for the Angels/Expos/Giants/Phillies/Mariners from 1989-1996. Dromerhauser’s boys from New York held their own against Frey and IMG won at the end, but on this day all of the boys felt like winners. Tenth Grader from Bay Shore High School , Bryan Dromerhauser said, “This was an experience I will never forget. I am grateful to have learned as much as I did in such a short amount of time and I can’t wait to test my skills on the field this upcoming season.”

The fundamentals of the game and the lessons learned by the boys is that being part of this type of training is a special opportunity to reflect on the gifts we are given by others. Those same gifts are the mission of Pitch for a Cure, to help children with juvenile Diabetes.

PFC President Rob Dromerhauser’s goal this year is to bring MLB into the circle of success as select pitchers from the big leagues will pitch to strike out juvenile diabetes by raising awareness and funds sponsored by the Diabetes Research Institute and AFL -CIO labor unions who will donate to PFC for every strike out they make this upcoming season.

The final leg of the journey to Tampa ended with an unforgettable memory as the boys visited future Hall of Famer Roberto Alomar’s home— priceless! They got to see Alomar’s Gold Gloves and other awards he gained in his storied career.

HENRY & ME/PITCH FOR A CURE TEAM

at Suffolk Community College Grant Campus

Suffolk Community College Grant Campus surrounds Connor Dromerhauser (Center) who visited the campus on April 7th as a team of adoring students admired him.

These Suffolk Community College Grant Campus Students are part of a Service Learning, Education, Promotion, and Awareness Team.  They are the team of specialists who will host the movie premiere Henry & Me that will benefit Pitch for a Cure in August at the college. Their role will be to build the bridge between community and Pitch for a Cure and Juvenile Diabetes as they work with Professor O'Connell, Rob and Mary Dromerhauser, 21st Century Wellness Academy and Rob Malichio, and Producer of Henry & Me, Ray Negron of the New York Yankees. These students are incredible!

Willie Randolph and Rob Dromerhauser Tour DRI

Pitch for a Cure Foundation will support DRI with future fundraiser

Diabetes Research Institute( DRI ) was founded in 1971 by a small group of parents of children with diabetes who were committed to finding a cure for this devastating disease.
Today, DRI has become the world leader of Diabetes research.
Pitch for a Cure was honored to be asked to tour DRI . As soon as we got the call we contacted our good friend, Willie Randolph and were able to see, first hand the latest in diabetic research.
DRI is comprised of leading researchers from around the world. And we had the honor of meeting many of them!
I think Connor summed it up best when he said,” the people at DRI are the smartest, most caring people and I know they will find a cure."
We will never forget our tour of DRI and all that we learned and those that we met. But as Bob Pearlman, President and Chief Executive Officer said,” the happiest day will be when we can close DRI because we have found a cure!"
